Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
5.0
Okay, here it goes *exhale*. I've been putting this review off for a long time because the wreck that this book has made me is incredulous.
We got our two main characters, Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt. To say that they're just incredible characters that are well written is such an understatement. They have been imprinted on my mind ever since the first chapter and I kid you not, they feel so so real and I just want to give them a hug.
Iris and Roman lives in a city called Oath. They're both journalists that are rivaling with each other to get the position of a columnist in their newspaper company, The Gazette. Obviously, in the first few chapters we got a pretty good banters between them and Rebecca ( the amazing author ) shows us the world building of this glorious fictional world and the themes that will be portrayed all the way throughout the book.
Now, this where it gets a bit harder. One of the main theme of this book is war alongside with fantasy and romance. The two main characters is doing okay (in some way) with handling their jobs while struggling with some problems at home until some stuff happened that requires one of them to do something that are really dangerous. That something has to do with the war itself, which, as for an emotional reader like me, just guts my heart out.
I really love how heart wrenching Divine Rivals is because gosh, Rebecca Ross really did a good job on portraying the feeling of courage, proud, pain, hopelessness and sadness of war. How every moment could be the last and how we should cherish everything till the last second. I feel the tremor and grief that are in Iris and Roman so bad which shows you how good Rebecca is with her words.
Also, the romance is top tier. The amount of angst and pining is perfect. Iris and Roman chemistry is off the chart. I got to admit, he was a bit of a jerk in the first few chapters but my god, he changed a lot with Iris and I am obsessed. Obviously, me as a hopeless romantic, the last few chapters were a bliss. They are spectacular, amazing, gorgeous, unforgettable, terrific, lovable and swoon worthy fictional couple. Definitely one that is very close to my dear heart.
Tropes/Themes
• Rivals to lovers
• Forbidden Romance ( from Roman pov )
• Terrifying & anguish war
• Secret identity
• Soulmates by letters
Theme song : Timeless by Taylor Swift
All of you gorgeous people better read Divine Rivals or I send Dacre to your door. One quick question, why can't I have a lover that send me letters and reread my letters every night? Hoping for a Roman Kitt *fingers crossed*
