it didn't really do anything monumentally like... bad? but oh was I bored through most of it. didn't really like the writing style at all, gracie's parts I especially didn't like, and even the end just made me roll my eyes. some of the writing/imagery was pretty neat and I overall like the premise, but this is a big example of: 'this is SO not for me'
also it reads a bit more like a dark fantasy than a straight folk horror so that may also be part of it. I like folk horror, I like dark fantasy, but this one didn't work for me. I watched the movie version of The Ritual and found that one mostly boring as well so I'm wondering if it's simply Nevill just not being an author for me, but I've also seen reviews mentioned the ritual BOOK is written different than cunning folk so who knows. ill give more of nevill's books a try, see what happens.
