The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer

adventurous emotional funny mysterious

4.5

This surprised me with how much I loved this and how emotional it was.  I knew this was pitched as if Willy Wonka was a famous author and it was adults competing. I was expecting it to be as charming or emotional as it was.
All the characters, main and supporting, were interesting to read about and fall in love with.  For a kid, Christopher was good and helped provide the motivation for our main character, Lucy.  The Illustrator, Hugo, was typical grumpy artist, but I loved the interactions between him and Lucy and him with Jack. Jack really did remind me of Willy Wonka, but with the snippets of chapters from Jack's books, it really reminded me of Middlegame and their fictional author, Deborah Baker.  I loved hearing the chapters and feeling a connection between them and the main storyline.
