The Poet's Cookbook: Details for over 50 forms, types of meter, structure, rhyme and over 100 writing exercises. by Dan Gilbert
informative
fast-paced
2.5
Most of the information in this book could be found by Googling “Types of poems.” A decent consolidation, but not much more.
I was hoping the writing exercises would be useful, but they seemed entirely unrelated to the book’s content, unhelpful (“Write the unwritable” with no elaboration?) and some were repeated (2 exercises are just to write “the worst poem ever”). Book also contains several typos, which is never what you hope to see in a writing guide.
+ 0.5 stars for the cute monkey haiku
