Kiss Me, Kill Me by Allison Brennan
3.0
I can't tell you how many times I was annoyed by this book. Generally I'm a pretty big fan of Allison Brennan's books -- I've read all the Max Revere's, Quinn & Costas, and now I'm working my way through the Lucy Kincaid anthology. However, maybe it's just been too long since I've read one and my tastes have changed?
I reaally wanted to love it. The murder and disappearance cases overlapping were compelling and the prose was for the most part good. The plot? Interesting and it kept my attention. I had it guessed wrong about halfway through, but I did call a few of the other things that happened throughout. But one thing that just rubbed me wrong throughout was the amount of spice... and the tone felt off during those parts. It really felt like they did nothing to advance the plot and it took away from the rest of the book. I also don't know why I've been seeing this trend in the last few books I've read, but a spice scene DIRECTLY following a very direct conversation about one of the participants being SA'd? Feels a little tone deaf and off. I know everyone has their own experiences of how they deal with it, but idk, just felt super weird. And another thing, the MC felt very whiny in parts and her character conflicted a lot. It was pretty annoying.
My husband listened to this one with me and agreed on all points, but for some reason gave it 4 stars and wanted me to inclue it in the review... I think he's too nice.
