Pretty Little Island by Rhea Ryan
5.0
A new-age, modern day retelling of Lord of the Flies… but make it spicy!!
Absolutely phenomenal debut novel. The writing was so well done, I seriously felt like I was a spectator standing in the front row watching the story unfold in front of me. When I say the author writes you into the moment, I mean it. You really feel like you are on the island with them, and can imagine each scene in your head easily.
The characters were very well developed. I loved each character’s personality, and how their actions matched perfectly with their MO. The characters relationships (romantic, friendship, familial) were so complex and intertwined, it added an extra layer of intricacy that really elevates the story. There were so many layers to this story, it really had me guessing until the end!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, so much so that I immediately read the novella “Twice Love Burned” afterwards (also 5 stars!).
Pretty Little Island includes topics like:
-Mental health struggles
-Power Dynamics
-Survival & Basic Human Instinct /Predatory Instincts
-Bullying
-Suspense/Cliffhanger
-Forced Proximity
-Hockey/Journalism
-Sex, drugs and… murder?!
-and of course, deceit, lies & secrets!
There was spice, not too little and not too much. It flowed well with the plot line and was hot
