Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

as a girl obsessed with ancient mythology, this would have to be up there in the best retellings i’ve read. saint did an amazing job in balancing the depth of the story with each character’s development without completely rewriting the myth as a whole (as some has done). it was especially interesting as this is one of the myths where the female victims of famous heroes are largely forgotten in favour of a patriarchal message about defeating monsters, but here is an honest take on ariadne’s story & the complexities of her new life. i do wish the book had explored a few more themes in depth such as guilt, betrayal & conflicting emotions but i understand that would cause it to be double the pages. also, the ending, although written well, seemed rushed & overly implicit. i won’t go into details to prevent spoilers but if you’ve read the book, i hope you agree. overall, a great read if you’re as into mythology as i am or if you’re just getting into it & want to explore a pair of lost female characters’ stories.
