I powered through the first 100 pages but I can’t keep going. The art is gorgeous and there are some interesting ideas here. The writing reads like a rough draft, though. It’s very stilted and there’s just such little meat to it. It’s all bones. Interesting bones but still bones. I feel like a graphic novel could have worked better for this. The author’s art is gorgeous (and was the big draw for much of her social media following) and the dialogue is not terrible—certainly decent enough that it could hold up in a more visual storytelling method. There’s an audience for everything and I genuinely hope the author finds hers and is able to keep going after this debut. I am not that audience, though.
