Start Your Own Cannabis Business: Your Step-By-Step Guide to the Marijuana Industry by Inc The Staff of Entrepreneur Media, Javier Hasse

3.0

I have a fair degree of knowledge about the marijuana industry and want to acknowledge that it is a complex beast that is constantly changing. Information about the industry is a lot like a new car...give it a short amount of time, and the value plummets. I'm not holding that against the author but do want to put it out there for other folks.
Data about the industry is pretty problematic because even in 2022, not a lot of state agencies are providing the data, so it ends up coming from third parties often through means that make it unreliable - such as surveys to membership-based organizations where folks opt-in. People who pay for memberships and who are also motivated to complete a survey create a narrow focus that is absolutely not generalizable.
My main concerns, though, come from two areas - the first is talking about the industry as though it is an exclusive environment that welcomes women. If you look at state data, women are less represented in ownership than in other industries. Lastly, it's troubling how this book talks about the industry as a potential gold mine where opportunities are plentiful. Markets in many states have been established, and there's not much room for new competitors. Also, more and more operators are large entities that can sustain the high costs and risks of operating a marijuana business so they can wait out smaller businesses.
If you want to get involved in the industry, please do a lot more homework. Sit in on rulemaking sessions, go to networking events and conferences, watch webinars that talk about the difficulties in making it in the industry, and get a job in the industry first.
