Amsterdam: A History of the World's Most Liberal City by Russell Shorto

informative inspiring reflective sad medium-paced

4.5

I absolutely loved this book, although it isn’t a fast read, I learned so much about Dutch history and the city I call home.

From the founding of the city, reformation and Catholic Church, golden age, with VOC, Rembrandt and Nicolaas Tulp, Spinoza, Descartes, Locke, Multatuli, Aletta Jacobs, Van Gogh, Anne Frank, Frieda Brommet, post war Provo movement, social change, gay marriage, drug politics.

It covers it all!
Super interesting and well-written.

I would have given 5 stars, but I wish the author would do a renewed additions with additions on the recent year’s uncovering on institutional racism in social services (toeslagenschandaal) - this could shed a light on how liberalism is broken in Amsterdam these days.
