I will forever be blown away by Tony Birch's writing, and I particularly adore his short stories. He is able to create the most wonderful tension in these short moments in the lives of the characters he captures. There is inevitably a moment where things click in my brain as I come to the end of each story, where he has tied the narrative in a knot and brought each story to its conclusion. Although conclusion isn't really the right word, because there is a sense in each story that a moment has been captured in this persons' life, but that their life is much bigger than that particular story. But it's this limited scope of each story which makes them so beautiful. I feel as though I understand each character, because they are just people who I could walk past on the street, who I could know or love. This is another Tony Birch masterpiece.
