I like and respect this less the longer I think of it. There's a line near the end that tells the reader exactly the point of the events of this book, in the exact terms of the protagonist's character development to come. These books are neither deft nor subtle, but even this line stood out. I will likely return to this series, but this was a pretty major fumble in an otherwise very enjoyable oeuvre.
