Having read Dune last year and finding myself exasperated with Paul and his mockery of the sacred beliefs of the desert he usurped, this book was brilliant.
Mehr is a fantasy protagonist that draws her strength from faith and a determination to revere tradition.
With so many fantasy stories ending with the dissolution of women’s power or gifts, I also loved the focus on balance rather than an ending relying on destruction, creation, or other violent catalysts.
The discussions of choice, autonomy, and sacrifice were very compelling.
The focus of this book was not romantic in nature but I would have loved an extra scene or two with Mehr exploring the love she chooses. (The ones we do get are top tier though).
This has been on my list since Olivie Bloke recommended it in her newsletter ages ago- I’m glad it finally made it to the top of my tbr!
