The publisher is calling this a Beauty and the Beast retelling—I would ignore that so you don’t have inaccurate expectations.
There are elements of fairytale, but more like the brothers Grimm. The overall tone is sad and mostly hopeless.
That said, as a sad story lover, I enjoyed this book! The author’s prose beautifully described the lonely Alaskan wilderness.
