Live by Night by Dennis Lehane

4.0

There's a fascination with crime bosses and the Mafia. Lehane joins the crowd with a compelling story set in the 1920s and 30s. Joe is the son of a Boston police chief, and a thief. His activities land him in prison where he connects with the boss of an Italian Mafia gang. The dance between Joe and his father and the Mafia boss carry through the novel. When Joe gets out of prison the boss sends him to the Tampa area to build up the rum business, which he does with great success. He falls in love with a Cuban woman, battles KKK thugs, and builds a great business. Ultimately, tho, the Italian boss is unpleased and chaos ensues. For a time. I won't give it all away. Bottom line: Lehane is a skilled writer who moves this story along, kept me wanting to keep reading, let me feel Joe's ups and downs. All in all, a good read.
