There's a quiet tragedy in a guy in a science fiction world desperately clinging to the romance and mystery of an untouched/unconquered land while "civilization" insists on catching up with him. Martin's really incredible  prose weaves the tale along so well. I almost wish this story were longer, but the way it gets in and out keeps it from overstaying its welcome.
