A History of Philosophy 1: Greece and Rome by Frederick Charles Copleston
4.0
Greek and Roman philosophy, covers philosophy from Pre-Socratics, Sophists and Socrates, through Plato and Aristotle, to Stoicism, Epicureanism and Neo Platonism. The chapters on Plato and Aristotle are the most detailed and comprehensive part of the book; whereas, those on Stoicism and Epicureanism seem somewhat lacking. Copleston is quite biased towards the Sophists, the philosophers I have always found to be most fascinating. He can be somewhat selective in terms of the themes he finds more interesting, such as the nature of god, being and soul. Having said that, Greek and Roman Philosophy delves deep into some of the most complicated philosophical systems without dumbing them down.
