Empire of Shadows by Jacquelyn Benson
3.5 stars
Very light Mummy like South American adventure. I pieces I loved the most were the history/lore and I wish we got more of it. It’s definitely fits the bill for a historical fantasy novel, Victorian age.
I enjoyed the book overall, our FMC really tested my nerves in some sections, especially when *spoiler* she threw Adam’s lucky rock overboard when he had done nothing but help her out at that point. Just WTF. I also don’t feel like Adam’s POV really contributed much to the story of except in maybe one spot for exposition on why the villains were on the expedition in the first place. In that sense, it places out a lot like a movie.
Otherwise if you don’t take it too seriously it’s a nice read.
