The Starlet and the Spy by Ji-Min Lee
3.0
Rating: 3.5/5
I picked this book up because I love Marilyn Monroe and am fascinated by anything to do with Asian culture and history. The writing is quite good especially with it being a translated text. It didn't feel awkward and the flow of the narrative easy.
Using the historical event of Monroe's visit to Korea after the Korean war and the fictionalized character of Alice to tell the story of the hotels faced during what we call The Forgotten War was well executed.
I didn't connect with Alice like I wish I had but I did enjoy the story. I do think it got a bit too over the top at the end in terms of what happened to her. I think the final event wasn't necessary to make her trauma and emotional scars relevant or powerful.
I do recommend especially if you are looking for a quick read.
Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars.
