Careering by Daisy Buchanan

my second proper audiobook & i decided to read something that i hadn’t heard much of before. a story that i found very relevant with regards to me entering the workforce in the summer (yay), i was excited to hear a modern perspective on starting a career, especially in writing. while imogen was the protagonist, the narrative also shifted to an older woman, harri, who although i thought was a good character & important to the plot, didn’t think her perspective added much or constituted a dual pov. while her voice gave the reader more context & information for some dramatic irony, it just wasn’t necessary for the story to grow & didn’t change anything within the relationship between her & imogen. perhaps it’s because i’ll soon be in a similar position to her, i found the writing behind imogen funny & enticing. i found myself smiling to her witty comments, disappointed at her downfalls & although it may be down to the talented actress that voiced imogen but she felt real. i was definitely the target demographic with this book & although it is presented as a heavy satire with the cartoonish stereotypes of coworkers & of people in the industry, i thought it was very honest in regards to how young people are struggling to get their careers started. any one of my friends, including me, may go through similar struggles & triumphs to imogen & thats why her character was what brought the book to life for me. her situation is what i both fear & crave for when i begin my career.
