Maria the Wanted and the Legacy of the Keepers by V. Castro

3.0

I obtained an ARC of this book from Reedsy Discovery for the purpose of providing a review.

When her boss flees, leaving vampires to wreak havoc at work, Maria finds herself face to face with an English vampire, named Adam, who takes extreme measures to protect her from his bloodthirsty colleagues. He has no way of knowing what it will cost her. She becomes determined to find him. Lucky for her, vampires live for years so she has plenty of time!

Along the way, she provides what justice she can for those in a small town over-run with cartel-influenced violence. The women in the community are so grateful that they provide small amounts of their own blood to Maria as thanks. But a town full of women with scarred hands and the disappearance of an influential - albeit shady - business owner begins to draw unwanted attention so Maria reluctantly moves on.

Eventually, she finds the man that changed her life. But she also finds more temptations and complications than she could have imagined. And the possibility to fight for a cause much, much bigger than she had imagined possible. We're talking end of the world big! By the end of the book, two of the major players are dead and the U.S. has just elected a President that is, to put it simply, evil in human form. What happens next is anyone's guess!

Over all, I really liked the book. It's always enjoyable to read a book with a strong female character who takes charge of her life. The only disappointment was the chunks of the story given over to telling the background stories of characters that were fairly minor or didn't show up until the last portion of the book. As the first book in a series, I can only assume that the author did this to prepare the reader for the rest of the story. I definitely would have preferred to get the backstories of some of the more prominent characters - Vlad and Adam for example - as opposed to some of the more minor characters. But this issue is definitely minor and I can still see myself reading the rest of the series
