Rereading this series years later, after watching the movies countless times, is a completely different experience but no less enjoyable.
It’s interesting to experience things from Katniss’s point of view and see how she misses obvious signs from Peeta, yet understand why when you think about her past and how focused she’s had to be on surviving and making sure her family survived.

Longer than necessary with a few eye-roll inducing scenes, but there were plenty of good moments too. Therapy was handled very well and I loved the found family elements. It was spicy, but I felt every one of my 45 years old listening to this one.

The ocean is scary y’all. Why? Because we know so little about it. We have no idea what could be lurking in its depths.
But what if we did know? Would we use that knowledge for the greater good? Project Jotunheim explores one such possibility. While the story was too brief for much character development, there’s enough horror to pack a punch. And since I can never resist a good pun, I have to say that it’s a Kraken good time.

So emotional, so moving, James Baldwin’s words stay with me long after I’ve finished reading. I love the way he writes, even when his words break my heart.

The best book about zombies I’ve read, because it’s about so much more than zombies. This was engrossing from the beginning and it nailed the ending. I love Melanie, and while I don’t love the other characters, I love their complexity. Even in the scenes I hated them, I can relate to the way they thought and acted.

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite classics and I was very much looking forward to a witchy retelling. While Salt & Broom delivered a fun twist on an old story, it fell short of my expectations.
What I loved most about the original tale was the passion I felt from Jane and Rochester’s interactions. Their relationship was a slow burn that dragged me along until I was obsessed over whether they would end up together. Everything in the retelling felt rushed instead. I didn’t have time to feel a connection with the characters so I struggled to find their romance believable.
There are good bones here and it’s not a bad retelling. I really enjoyed the changes to the plot. The idea of making it a fantasy-gothic was an excellent fit. I just wish it had more depth so those gothic vibes could be fully formed.

Possibly the most cringeworthy audiobook I’ve ever listened to, and I mean that in the best way. I don’t always love an unreliable narrator, but it worked perfectly in Yellowface. I spent most of the book both astonished and not at all surprised at the lack of self awareness around race and prejudice. Astonished because it hits so hard hearing it over and over, not at all surprised because sadly I see and hear worse where I live.
What I enjoyed the most was the unknown about Juniper’s story. What really happened in the apartment that fateful night? What caused her to have counseling earlier in her life? There are so many possibilities that could paint her in a different light-either more sinister or more sympathetic. I would have loved a chapter or two from Athena’s point of view as well, but I do see the advantages of leaving that for the reader’s speculation.

Some vintage horror ages well; this one didn’t for me. There is bigotry and sexism throughout. It could be said that it’s a product of its time, but there isn’t enough character or plot development to make it worth excusing. The beginning was strong and I was excited to learn more about the house and demon within, but it quickly went to other places and became more exaggerated. There’s some fun to be had here, but it’s not a favorite.
