Sandwiching this one right between the first two in terms of enjoyment.
As in both previous books, the twists are telegraphed from the beginning (Ada really enjoys telling us everything she's going to do), but again, this does not detract from the story at all. If you're looking for a puzzlebox, this is not the series for you.
If, however, you're looking for fun, science-fictional, criminal shenanigans, you could do a lot worse than this series.
Other reviews had me prepared to be disappointed by a lack of resolution, but I'm satisfied with where it ends. If we get more, I will probably read them. If we don't, I'll still recommend the trilogy (with some caveats for romance readers).
I always think "ugh, not Swindon!" when I re-start this one (bc my heart belongs to Jurisfiction), but only bc I forget just how much happens here. The perfect ending for the first half of the series.
Less set-up than the first novel, obviously. Idk if I necessarily like this one more than the first, but I spent a significant amount of my "reading" time (Kobo was on but I was staring into space) thinking about Mercy's faith and how it had an impact on this particular story. t's not the sort of thing I typically care to read about (I'd much rather rant about authors who don't understand tarot meanings), but I didn't hate it here and am ready to move onto the next.
I've been down and out with the flu for several weeks, and haven't been able to focus on anything so a re-read of this was just right. It has been long enough that I remembered almost nothing until it actually happened.
Aspen Creek is so near where I went to junior high and high school, that if it were a real place our teams would have played each other, and that is always weird for such a specific area.
Whew. Probably should have checked the CWs before starting this? Would recommend that you do, if you're considering reading this.
I spent a whole lot of time while I was reading trying to figure out if I even liked it, and I still don't have an answer. Kinda loved the last sentence, though, which was actually what I'd been wanting the whole book but didn't dare hope for. Probably going to bump Maeve Fly up my TBR now.
Graphic: Animal death, Biphobia, Body horror, Body shaming, Emotional abuse, Homophobia, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Grief, Religious bigotry, Death of parent, Lesbophobia, Fire/Fire injury, Injury/Injury detail, and Pandemic/Epidemic
A lot of this didn't make sense to me and I kept getting all of the side characters confused with each other. I still don't understand the whole [gestures] thing with Billie...or most of it, really. But it was fine, and I didn't hate reading it. 🤷
I already know I love Sayaka Murata, so I did not need to know anything about this book before requesting it. And not knowing anything about it had me saying "hahahahahahahaha, what the fuuuuuuuuck" under my breath repeatedly. Delightfully weird and horrifying, idk how else to describe it.
