The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline
3.25
struggled a lot with this book. same problem, didn't care about anyone or the history. and it wasn't what i expected. the book focuses a lot of the two white women and it felt like Mathinna, the indigneous girl, was just thrown into the story to make it different
The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King by Carissa Broadbent
4.75
this one is written in dual povs. they're living together in the castle until their enemies take over. then chap 44 happens
Euphoria by Lily King
3.5
my thing was that i didn't really care about these people or the anthropology or the history.
she's stuck in a loveless marriage and husband doesn't stimulate her mentally AND he is abusive so that's great. her husband is jealous of her fame and also an abuser. and the other guy loves her. at the end, she decides to leave the husband for guy 2 but the husband murders her and she was pregnant
90% of the story developed in the field where readers learn about characters as they study the indigenous groups
i'm a sucker for plot so the ending bumped it up from 3.25 to 3.5

The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent

so so easy to read which is why it's 4.75/5. read it to fill my sjm void and actually not bad. fast-paced. they get married at the end out of the blue???
these vampires are competing to death so that they are granted one win by the goddess. oraya is human (surprise!) but don't worry, the most powerful vampire king is her adopted parental figure and has trained her how to kill/survive/win. she meets another vampire raihn (these names are an eye roll) and they first hate each other but somehow fall in love (didn't expect that). sadly no mates in this world

The review you didnāt ask for: Donāt bother. Not into the writing style. Itās like the author tried to overwrite the heck out of it. And the protagonist is infuriating. Giving āIām better than everyone bc Iām strong and snarky so donāt f with meā which could be great but she comes off annoying af
The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden
3.5
i don't know how i think about this. the most interesting part was the section towards the end where she reads the other person's diary.
the genre flipping was a bit of whiplash. she's paranoid and mean, it's a mystery--who is stealing everything? then falls in love with the woman and becomes obsessed. it's a love story. oh wait it's actually about identity, war and displacement.
i liked her gay brother the most. everyone else was meh
slow paced, character-driven
