I think there were a lot of cool and unique things about this magic system and the broad strokes of the story I like. However. This duology could have probably been a standalone. This had a slow start for me. Picked up for a bit then it just felt like the author had too many ideas of things she wanted to be included in this universe and didn't know how to cut back. Like not every idea she had needed to be included (like market day) I going to read part 2 next so we'll see if my opinion still stands but I imagine it will. I found this to be at the very least 100 pages too long

A lot of twists or surprises were obvious to me. But I liked the story there wasn't a drag with backstory or unnecessary fluff

Enjoyable quick read, though a little obvious and predictable. I do wish she had explored the invisibility thing a little more
and I feel like after the kidnapping incident it just stopped and never really got resolved so that was disappointing

Full disclosure I have the vaguest of memories of the ex hex but I feel like I liked it better ? This felt like a true sequel - a little rehash of the first story with different characters. I enjoyed it while it was happening though

I think if you like sci-fi this is a must. I'm particular so here's my major beef: it took 10/14 hours of audio book just to build the damn thing.
then they spent maybe one chapter "making contact" so to speak only to come back and no one believes them? I was also confused about the aside about the Gilgamesh.
I like so much that the main character is a female scientist and even the fictional president of the USA is a woman. However. I think the scene setting could have been done in half the time IMO. Also felt like the twist ending was unnecessary

Felt too much like "we'll prescribe you a cat"

I was disappointed with this. I felt like if Helen truly had been to therapy she would have worked through a lot of her lingering issues regarding Grant and the accident and abandonment/worthiness etc but clearly she didn't put in the effort. I also felt like their behavior and issues were that of 20 somethings not 30 somethings. Parts in the beginning went on for too long and the end felt like it went on too long

I don't know at all what to think of this. It kind of reminds me of "The Vegetarian" in a sense? I feel like the synopsis did not prepare me for that.

This is a me thing for sure. I went in blind and I felt like there was too much -for me - focus on religion. I'm not a fan of organized religion so I wasn't connecting to the story

If this isn't a Hallmark movie in book form I don't know what is. I liked it quite a bit but I felt like the end took to long to come together.
