A Painted House by John Grisham
Did not finish book. Stopped at 26%.

The setting was not doing it for me I couldn't see or picture what was happening. I felt disconnected from the characters and the plot was not intriguing. Wartime settings, cotton picking, hill people and brawls with Mexican workers just was not my jam

#BirthdayBookBacklog update:
Just finished The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve.
The writing format was messy. Past and present all fed into each other on the pages. But I was hooked from the beginning! I guess this is a Historical Fiction and somewhat of a thriller/true crime.
The ending was heartbreaking but I would recommend it to some!

Serial killer mystery meets legal thriller. The writing was clever and had me in the edge of my seat with an ending I was NOT anticipating. This was an overall entertaining read that can work as a standalone without reading the series.
