Check the CW/TW before reading this one.

This book was recommended to me by one of my Mexican high school students as she saw herself in it so much and knowing her story I can see why.

I really enjoyed this audiobook and hearing directly from the main character, it really felt like I was in her head while listening. The book deals with so many challenging themes, most prominently grief. On top of it she is experiencing mental health issues, the challenges of being the child of two immigrant parents, and all that is being a teenage girl. Though the focus is on the main character's life, you do get a subplot of mystery that is actually resolved by the end.

I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sánchez is a coming-of-age story. Julia Reyes lives with her undocumented parents and the memory of her perfect but dead sister. She wants nothing to do with her family in the US or Mexico. Her goal is to leave Chicago, go to college, and become a writer. Of course, nothing is easy. Over time she uncovers dark secrets and learns acceptance. An inspiring journey of acceptance and assimilation. Highly recommended.

"In some ways, I think that part of what I’m trying to accomplish—
whether Amá really understands it or not—is to live for her, Apá, and
Olga. It’s not that I’m living life for them, exactly, but I have so many
choices they’ve never had, and I feel like I can do so much with what I’ve been given. What a waste their journey would be if I just settled for a dull, mediocre life. Maybe one day they’ll realize that."

What a suprise, this book! The story got me hooked from the first page until the last one. Julia is a really interesting character. She's real and raw, and that makes the story powerful and easy to relate to. Growing up is hard, especially when you don't fit into the categories society and your family wants you to. All the other characters are equally interesting and keep the story going. I could write pages and pages reviewing this book but I'll end it here for now. (Be aware of some TWs before reading it!)
