I’d probably like these books more if Sidney wasn’t an insufferable guy for most of them. For someone who pretended to be dead for FIFTEEN MONTHS and left his wife mourning, he sure is insensitive and callous to his wife for literally doing anything; especially when it pertains to her war time job as a spy. I get that he’s struggling and went through a major world war and saw and did horrible things, but ugh, he’s so dense.

I honestly can’t stand him and won’t continue the series because of him. Verity is always apologizing to him and I’m like girl, he sucks. Also this attempted love triangle with Max is just sad.

Historical page turner

The 2nd book in the Verify Kent mystery series is the perfect historical page turner. I could not put it down. Secrets from the psst come into the light ,and Verify &Sidney must deal with them while repairing their marriage, chasing a former agent across Belgium, and trying not to be set aflame. Great read!

3.5 stars. The plot is well put together and entertaining but the writing needed a little help. "I inhaled a shaky breath" is used about 1,500 times and it drove me nuts. Hoping Verity will be more of a confident heroine in the next book.

This book was heart wrenching and pulled your emotions in so many different directions.

I was mad, sad, frustrated and yet understood everyone's actions and decisions. Verity and Sidney made me want to cry throughout most of this book. I couldn't wait to finish it and see how it ended, but I need a break from the aftermath of WW1. I shed a tear or two for their situation and after reading this book I just need a simple non-war book to clear my head. Nevertheless this was a great book and Anna Lee Huber is an amazing writer, who can really make you feel for her characters.

***** Amazing read, 5 stars *****

Very quick read, follow up to Huber's first Verity Kent mystery, this second installment follows our intrepid girl on the path of protecting wartime friends and wartime secrets. I enjoy the historical period of this mystery's setting, immediately following WWI.
