Bly offers unvarnished truths of medical malpractice in women's psychiatric history during the Gilded Age. Psychosis and recovery work interchangeably as nurses continuously beat the vulnerable as punishment. Little care is given on Blackwell Island, unlike steps taken in the earlier process.

I love finding little gems like this. Nellie Bly was an early journalist who wrote based off experience. Her time at an asylum for women was valuable then & still remains valuable now. This book is really well written & well organized for as early as it was written & it is very straight to the point. I did the audio & the narrator, Laural Merlington does such a good job putting you right in the thick of things. This audio also had two small bonus stories of other times Bly insert herself into situations to get a good view on things.

This was an informative read, but I was not too fond of the pretentious way it was written. Nor was I fond of the graphic descriptions of the different kinds of abuse the author encountered ( I was expecting a less detailed description but was caught off guard by the disgusting way people can treat others).

I am so impressed that Nellie Bly was able to pull off getting committed to the Blackwell Island Insane Asylum for a writing project. She put a lot of trust in her employer to get her out. This was a very interesting read!

Just not my cup of tea. I already knew all of this, because of American Horror Story Asylum, which I would recommend to anyone who can handle scary/eerie things 🤷🏻‍♀️😊

There are certainly are more extensive works on the subject, but this is a good read for anyone interested in it for the historic importance. The woman known as Nellie Bly (pen name) was one of the earliest investigative reporters. It's terrifying how easily she was able to get herself committed to an insane asylum. Just as it's heartbreaking to read about just the abuses she witnessed or heard many accounts of. Modern works may be a bit more in-depth on these kinds of abuses, but Bly was instrumental in getting more funds diverted to the care of those suffering on Roosevelt Island and was instrumental in the call for reform. A bit of a slow start, but a quick read once she is declared a "hopeless case" and shipped off to the asylum.
