Just spent a solid twenty minutes writing a review for this but accidentally hit the home button and it all got deleted, so… I’ll try to sum it up because I can’t bear to rewrite it properly right now:

- Loved it, didn’t really notice any of the complaints that other readers had (regarding pacing, plot, characters etc) while reading - thinking about it now, I still don’t mind, even though I see what they’re saying
- Loved Laurence. He’s still wonderful and stubborn and forever loyal to Tem
- Loved Temeraire. He’s still baby but fierce and smart and forever loyal to Laurence
- Loved the continued growth of the characters, always a joy to read
- Jealous of Tem’s Language Learning Skills™️
- Excited to read the third book

Took me a great deal longer to finish this installment but worth it in the end. I do wish some parts near the end were more fleshed out while other parts, in the beginning, were described in great detail. Temeraire is as always charming and well earned his rank of my favorite character.

Excellent sequel. Slower paced than the second one and more devoted to showing how dragons fit into the world at large, very interesting stuff. Laurence and Temeraire are the emotional core still and as lovely as ever.

Fairly different in pacing from the first book, but not in such a way that I didn’t enjoy it. I feel like the blurb on the back of the book isn’t very accurate since 2/3 of the book is basically a description of their voyage to China via boat instead of actually taking place in China, which is what I had been looking forward to since it would mean more world building. Instead, this book was mainly focused on politics (which I’m not super interested in) with a little bit of action in the last third of the book. I still enjoyed it, but I’m afraid this has fallen prey to second book syndrome. I’m also not very sure what the third book will be about, since the end kind of left off with a vague indication of what to expect but not in the cliffhanger kind of way I would expect.
