A decent effort, but feels hollow, predictable, and almost amateurish.

A great read if you want to learn a bit more lore of the Dragon Age games.
The descriptions of battles can seem a bit repetitive, then again there isn't a lot of different things one can do with a sword, I suppose.
The descriptions were well done and made it easy to imagine the appearance of characters, places and battles.
Overall: I loved the book. And recommend it to other Dragon Age fans

Closer to 3.5 stars. This book was fun and I enjoyed the characters and getting more Dragon Age. But it felt a bit... shallow, for lack of a better word and it didn't always feel like the relationships were earned (especially the romances). Also, it is clearly a spin-off and won't make much sense to anyone without a basic familiarity with Dragon Age before starting it.

Well-written rousing tale; quite good for a video game license.

Maric and Loghain’s relationship was the highlight of this book for me. Also surprise, this book made me like Loghain.

Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne is a prequel story to the video game Dragon Age: Origins and is written by the lead writer David Gaider. (Who better to know the story and characters of this world?) This is a fabulously written story, giving information on Maric, Loghain, and Rowan during the time of Orlais’s occupation of Ferelden, things only briefly mentioned in-game. It takes place from 8:96 Blessed through 9:00 Dragon, and we even learn how the Chantry decided to name the next age the Dragon Age.
I appreciated getting to learn more of Maric and everything he had to do in order to win back his throne from the Orlesians. This story also gives a real good look at Loghain and how all these events occurred in his life leading to his decisions in Origins. I loved the friendship between him and Maric and was so sad when things took a turn for the worse. It made perfect sense that it would happen but still! At the end, we also learn how Loghain becomes the Hero of River Dane and gets titled the Teyrn of Gwaren.
I have read this book several times and love it each time. Thedas is such a wonderfully complex world and it is expressed in these pages. I would recommend this book to any Dragon Age fan.
