I like this series but I officially dislike Kylie. She used police resources and time for her own personal problems and dragged Zach into it, knowing it could affect his job and relationship with Cheryl. Zach, you're a putz. Get some boundaries. Cheryl, walk away now.

I loved Annie, the senior citizen con woman. I hope she shows up in the series again, even if just briefly.

I just finished NYPD Red 4 by James Patterson. What a wonderful surprise! This was his best book in many years. NYPD Red is an elite New York City police task force assigned to protect the rich and famous, and keep their names out of the papers. Detective Zach Jordan and his partner, Detective Kylie MacDonald must solve the robbery of a valuable necklace and the murder of a Hollywood starlet. The writing style will remind you of Robert B. Parker. Both detectives also have problems with their personal lives and it is a real page turner. –Bob K.

It took me a week to finish this book because I really just wasn't engaged in the characters or what was happening. I only finished it because I was too far into it.

Book #2 is a great follow up to book #1--Faster paced, the thrills increase the need to race through to the finish!

Quick read, a little boring. I expected a little more mystique or action or something, but it fell pretty short.

I go into the Red books with lowered expectations, but even so, this story seemed a little light. It's a much smaller case than they usually work on. I also think it was a mistake to get them bogged down with that superfluous hospital theft sub plot. Overall I enjoyed it, but it's a step down from the other books in the series.

For better or worse, we discuss all things James Patterson in this special episode of the All the Books Show podcast: https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/episode-102-james-patterson-at-last
