Some interesting narratives but I realized this was part of a series & probably explains why I found it rather confusing? Also, picked up other books I wanted to read instead.

Another fine work by Ms. Smith, who always confounds my expectations. Fresh ideas and fresh words make reading her books a happy experience.

I really enjoyed the first 70 per cent of this, but the final 30 per cent did not hit. Ali Smith’s narratives are always piercing and powerful but this needed a tighter edit and I would’ve loved more focus on the contemporary story and less on the blacksmith - all in all I love bookclub !! but there’s better Ali Smith out there

A good book, however the prose style is not really my favourite. Interesting snippets of life and extremely contemporary in its spirit.

This is a bit of an easier read then most of Ali Smith’s books. It’s mainly about Sands, who’s father is sick in hospital, during the covid years so she can’t really visit him. She is an academic. One night a woman, Marina, calls her out of the blue, with a story about being detained at the border. They knew each other at uni but didn’t really like each other. Now they tell each other stories which really affect each other. Marina’s family ends up moving into Sands’ house. There is also an interlude about a woman blacksmith back in medieval times. This is quite interesting about what life was like back then.
