Such a beautiful tale of family, love and friendship, the narrative was enchanting and the premise very interesting. I had been putting off reading this book for no other reason that I didn't feel in the mood, and I'm very glad that I finally decided to go for it because I know this is one of those books that will stay with me for a long time 5/5

Black Cake is a fantastic book. The complex and interconnected lives of the MCs give the book depth and interest that I found quite engaging. The bits of historical and/or scientific information sprinkled throughout this intriguing story made the read that much more enjoyable. By the end of the book, I felt close to all of the MCs. I rejoiced at their triumphs and lamented at their sorrows. Overall this was a book I am happy to have read and will gladly recommend to others.

The first few chapters were kind of slow with the pace of story telling but once it picked up I couldn't put it down.
Benny and Byron are too stubborn characters but that also makes them feel very realistic. It shows how unanswered questions can lead to family splitting assumptions.
Covey goes through so much that it seems almost like there is a touch of fantas that allows her so many opportunities to start over or find people in the serendipitous ways she did.

Although this isn’t a historical fiction book, there’s so much history included in these books. I hate the strong black woman stereotypes but honestly the women go through so much and come out on the other side. But also they get to just be as well.

it took me a while to get through this but this book was honestly incredible. the family dynamics felt so real and the characters were all so fleshed out and this was a really unique perspective on the immigrant experience but it was done so well!
i think it's pure excellence that allows wilkerson to reveal covey's story in such a way that allows us to be so connected to the characters in all her forms, and the way all the characters are brought together feels so natural even if it is the most unlikely of circumstances
this is truly an incredible book, and one i would definitely recommend!!
