This book has everything you need if youre looking for a quick, easy, exciting read with:
✦ Friends to Lovers
✦ DND Style adventure party
✦ Monster fights
✦ Adorably clueless gays
✦ witty MC's with flirty banter
✦ magic curses
✦ HAPPY EVER AFTER!
Arek & Matt are probably my favorite pair out of my recent reads. Arek is kind hearted and figuring things out while lowkey being a bit of a mess and Matt is the perfect support with his own set of charms. Together though theyre a classic case of poor communication but tons of heart lol
The entire party is so unique and each member of their little team adds fun moments and great depth to the story which kept things interesting and entertaining.
I will say the plot is your usual YA tale, there arent any real twists and turns but the book really doesnt need them to stay interesting. I found this to be a very enjoyable read with writing that painted things so perfectly that I felt like I was in the world myself.
I would love a second installment with more Arek & Matt and I look forward to reading FT Lukens other book 'In Deeper Waters' because the vibe of this was exactly the kind of story I love to unwind with.

The mutual pining is taken to 11 in this sweet and hilarious queer fantasy romp. Truly, the Merlin adaptation we deserve.

I tried reading another book by this author a while ago, but DNFed it and I was told to give this one a try and it was incredibly…. average? It was truly just fine. It honestly read like a fanfiction, which is neither a good or a bad thing for me, but I had an okay time reading it.

SO SO cute!! the concept behind this book was so cool: it’s a story about what happens AFTER a magical prophecy is completed. so the characters supposedly went on this epic journey to defeat the Evil Villain, but we didn’t read any of it, it started moments after the villain was killed. it was very much dungeons-and-dragons-esque and i loved the representation. it was very diverse, both in race and sexuality. there were straight relationships, gay relationships, people of color, non-binary individuals, and all of this was completely normal and not like showcased by the author as a “look how cool i am for including this!” kind of way. it all felt very natural. i liked how it was sort of a rom-com, but in a fantasy setting so there was also magic and dragons and cool things like that. it combined every trope that i love and my two favorite types of books (ya fantasy and romance). definitely gonna be one of my new favorite comfort reads, it’s very easy to get through, and also uses a lot of current language. like, if you had told me that someone from gen z wrote this, i would believe you. love, love, loved it!

•DNF at 33%
•Summary: Arek is a wizard, him and a soldier group dethrone an Evil King. Now Arek has a big problem 'cause he can't leave the castle/throne without having a wife/a marriage or he's is gonna pay a big price.
•Actuall Ranking: I will not give a ranking. I only read 33% of the book. I think is infair to give stars if you didn't finish the whole book.
•Literary Genre: Young Adult. M/M Fantasy.
Rom-Com with medieval Castle (someone say it here on Goodreads, I think it's the perfect way to describe it)
I wish I read the summary before reading the book. It said "Carry On meets Arthurian legend in this funny..."I didn't like "Carry on", this really had a similar style.
•.Why did I DNF?.: I associate Fantasy with The Middle Ages or the Medieval Era (between the fall of Rome in 476 CE and the beginning of the Renaissance in the 14th century/1300) and a European Country. An old environment as you can see.
Here the language that F.T. Lukens uses feel too modern. I saw a lot of American Slang. It really took me out of the fantasy world all the time. I doesn't need to be an old/formal English like William Shakespeare, but at least give me something neutral, with no SLANG.
Example:
1) "Fuck you, but fine. Tell me"
2) "My best friend, my confidant, my secret crush"
3) "What kind of backward misogynistic assault-y realm do we live in?....."
4) "Why didn't you find another job?"
"Find another job? That pays well? In this economy?
Fair point.
Did you see? That's really a modern slang.
It wasn't for me. We have Arek and his group of friends, they're all soldiers. But instead on thinking on them as a soldiers, I thought they were a group of Gen Z or a time-travel group that doesn't want to fit in that time. It makes me feel that these characters doesn't fit in a fantasy.
*That's my opinion 'cause a prefer a Fantasy with DARK themes or a Historical Fantasy.
*If you prefer a fantasy modern version: with fanfiction wibes, and some tropes go for it.
#Super fast-paced.
#First Person Narrator (Masculine main character. Arek POV)
#Young Adult. M/M Fantasy.
#Rom-Com with medieval Castle.
#Gen Z Humour.

This was so cute!!! Like if Legends & Lattes and Winter’s Orbit had a baby that also has a HEALTHY dose of classic YA. The cluelessness of the MC went on for a little too long and was a teensy bit too forced but overall I would recommend this bc the DND/fantasy vibe is perf, and I will be reading the rest of FT Lukens’ work.

This story was just a joy. The characters are fun and lovable, even the ones we don’t get too much time with. The found family vibes are strong here. The main romance got frustrating after a while, but it made me keep reading cause damn it they needed to just kiss already! Very cute, very funny. Loved it!

I loved this book I loved the comedy in it. It felt like a DnD campaign that I heard my friends do. And I love the concept of what happens after a big bad is defeated.
