Written for everyone who works in the environmental sector from professional ecologists and environmental managers to government workers, site managers and volunteer and community groups, this handbook details the amphibian species found across the UK, their life cycles, habitat needs, distribution and conservation status as well as relevent legislation and policies including a section dedicated to the Natterjack Toad.
Baker then sets out the best practices with regard to pond creation and restoration including how to address other pond species such as fish, waterfowl and non-native amphibians for the benefit of the species the work is being undertaken for and how to spot amphibian diseases such as Ranavirus and Chytrid that infect amphibian populations and the precautions to take to prevent their spread. Baker goes on to detail the terrestrial habitats used by amphibians and how to manage these for the benefit of local amphibian popualtions including creating and maintaining hibernation sites.
Baker includes a section of the wider populations of amphibians and how these populations are interlinked through pond networks and terrestrial habitat corridors, including gardens, SUDS and ditches.
The entire handbook is written in an accessible and easy to follow manner with plenty of references to further reading to help produce amphibian friendly habitats on all scales. Highly recommended for anyone working in the environmental industry or even those who wish to make their own little amphibian haven.

This is a very thorough text to the point that it holds your hand through the process of amphibian habitat management and creation.
It is well referenced and extremely clear and concise in the way it is written. As with many other handbooks designed to explain practical aspects of ecology the text is no substitute for actual experience. Nevertheless this is a must read. I was particularly fond of the natterjack section and shall endeavour to read more about this species.
