beautifully written, the scenes of war outpower those of love.

Beautifully written. 2 stories one family. I fail to see the relevance Stephens granddaughter has in the story ESP the birth of her own child at the end unless I'm missing the mete-fore about single parent childbirth. None the less a good read. Being a mans man I particularly enjoyed the war parts

I'm a sucker for WWI fiction and non-fiction so this book really made an impression on me. It sets a bar by which other novels on this subject should be measured. Everything is right, the tone, the emotion, the historical details - this is Mr. Faulks best book by far for me, but it is not that his other novels are bad in any way, its just that this one is the gold standard that anything else pales in comparison to.

It's one of those books you want to devour, but has you slow down because you need to savour it. A beautiful, heartwrenching, powerful story that follows Stephen Wraysford from 1910 on. Impossible, love, complicated relationships, how the horrors of war affect your emotions... It's a book that kept me captivated from page 1 until the very end.
