I cannot get enough of Gou Tanabe's illustrations for these different Lovecraftian worlds. He excels in capturing the uncapturable.

When I found out there was a manga version of this story I was instantly sold, though wondered if it would be able to capture the building horror and eeriness of the original story. Once I started reading though, I was quickly shown that Gou Tanabe knew what he was doing. The fish people are properly worrying and uncanny, and the atmosphere of dread is masterfully doled out. Being from Massachusetts, I can say that this town looks unlike any town in the area I've seen, but the fantastical and off kilter nature of the story makes it at least a little more understandable.

My favorite Lovecraft story, and not one I thought needed a graphical interpretation. This blew me away, really captured the weirdness of the Deep One horror.

took me forever to finish this because i went through a big "manga doesn't count as reading" phase, but damn this one is good and creepy. all of Gou Tanabe's H.P. Lovecraft adaptions have been well-illustrated and capture the otherworldly horror Lovecraft depicted so well.
