A very personal account of one woman's relationship with and analysis the work of Jane Austen and the way i which her books have conneccted with the events of the writer's long life.

When a book causes me to reflect on my reading history and the impact reading has had on my life and possibly some of my life choices then this one deserves high praise.
Ruth's journey and her telling through literature, most particularly the Jane Austen novels, felt like a breath of fresh air ... I was, for most of the book an observer but there were occasions I was drawn in and found myself clearly identifying when some of her considerations and insights.
Jane Austen wrote with wit, insight, control and a sense of fun .. while also reflecting a time and a timelessness to her story telling.

Fascinating memoir structure. Enjoyable reading about reading and a full life made fuller by literature.

Mixed feelings about this book. It’s well written and has moments of wonderful insight. Some parts dragged. Some interesting thoughts on being a woman and finding who you are/what you want

I’m so sorry but my biggest takeaway from this is that Ruth Wilson seems like a snob. The premise of the book did not give it the structure it needed, the world building was lopsided and disjointed. Could tell ya heaps about where she sat between classes at USyd, no idea really what her life in Tel Aviv was like. Repetitive and confused in purpose - I switched to the audiobook so I could at least listen at 2x speed and wrap it up.

I enjoyed this though it skirted the personal or deep which is unusual considering it is a pseudo autobiography.

DNF at about 30% - a quite tone-deaf memoir from someone who had the means to escape her life for 10 years. Far too academic in style for how it was billed.

This book is just a bunch of randomly put together ideas. Very hard to read.
