What an absolutely remarkable man and story.

The first half of this book is a quick rundown of a man's experience during the Holocaust. It's quick, with just enough detail to make your heart ache, but not so much that you are completely depressed. The second half of the book explains how this man--who lost his sight after being beaten by German soldiers--decided to get a seeing eye dog, even though every dog reminded him of the frightening German Shepherds in camp.

It's a sweet book of forgiveness and tolerance and patience.

I have to admit the title and synopsis of Trusting Calvin is misleading.. Calvin's appearance and journey with Max is short and Sharon Peters could have done more to speak on this remarkable relationship. Max Edelman's experience with the cruelties of the holocaust deserves a book of its own.

Contrary to the title, most of the book is about Max Edelman’s experiences during the Shoah and immediately after; about a third of it deals with his time with a guide dog. However, it is kindly written and portrays difficult history very well. It’s also the only book I’ve read so far that tackles the topic of trauma in Holocaust survivors.
