Not a fan on this one - writer was ripping off Colombo mannerisms. The smoking/not smoking descriptions were extremely annoying. I wonder if it was the translation or writing? I did like the inspector's relationship with the criminal element of Firenza!

Vichi’s storytelling shines through his illustrious characters, each one brought to life with such depth and intricacy that I find myself eagerly following alongside them as they evolve with every case.
Set against an evocative backdrop of Sardinia in the 1960s, this novel immerses you in a world where the beauty of the landscape contrasts sharply with the darkness of human nature. Inspector Bordelli, with his blend of melancholy, wisdom, and a sense of justice, feels like an old friend. Vichi’s rich descriptions and attention to historical detail make the setting come alive, adding another layer to the immersive experience.
What I love most is how Vichi balances the complexities of the mystery with the personal growth of his characters. Watching Bordelli and his colleagues navigate their personal and professional challenges adds a compelling depth to the narrative. Death in Sardinia is not just a whodunit; it’s a thoughtful exploration of human nature, morality, and the relentless passage of time.

Read on plane from HK to Frankfurt. Too many digressions and odd characters.

Update 6/10/22
I revisited this book as part of my Bordelli Series re-read and it still stands up to my original thoughts, my favourite of the series. I just find it perfect, the setting being Christmas and festive. There are lots of stories and reflections but they add to the characters. You also get two cases involving the Inspector and Piras. The ending and resolutions are satisfying and the right thing to do too.
I'm looking forward to revisiting the rest of the series. I'm sure it will be as enjoyable as it was the first time. I only wish I could be invited to one of those amazing dinners!

My favourite book of the Inspector Bordelli series so far, a fair bit longer than the previous two and much more meat to it. Two parallel stories with Bordelli and Piras.
I have to say for me now, Inspector Bordelli is now surpassing my other favourite Italian detective in Comissario Soneri.
I am looking forward to the next installment, which I have locked and loaded ready to go tomorrow.

Very enjoyable, and thought provoking with respect to Italy's divided past. But it could have moved a bit faster. It had more politics and character development than others in the series, while the criminal investigation took up less space.
