This took me a little over three weeks to finish, largely because it’s so dense and informative, with many citations and quotes from literature, film, speeches, etc. it also doesn’t help that I started this shortly after the inauguration and so much of the Doomerism felt a bit too close to home at times. However, I appreciated the humorous and thoughtful insight into history’s cyclical nature and the gleams of hope we should still do our best to have, no matter how scary it gets.

This may be my favourite non-fiction book in 2025, and it’s only February.
I could feel my brain expanding in real time as I ripped through this read.
Its a deeply empathetic read that covers every single apocalypse situation from meteors to the bomb to the bible.
I learnt so much and it honestly changed my world views on life, death, AI, science and humanity.

As Iain Banks remarked, science fiction doesn't tell you much about the future but it does tell you a great deal about the time in which it was written. This acccount of end time narratives ranges from Bible stories through to twenty first century blockbuster films and in every instance throws light and psychological insights onto the conditions that created them.
