There were parts of this book that were 5 stars for me,  but as a literature lover it surprised me that what actually took me out of the story were the parts discussing the literary tour. In addition, I found some of the “lessons” a bit too directly stated.

Honestly sign me up for a literary tour of England

I enjoyed the contrasting points of view between mother and daughter and learning about the love and loss they shared. You can’t help but draw comparisons between the abductions and murder of Brittany and the case of the Bowraville Murders, something Behrendt has no doubt done intentionally.

A reflective and powerful read. Reveals the connections and complexities of family life, hardship, loss and literature. Behrendt weaves together a mother daughter relationship to reveal the headache of the past and the hope of the future. Would definitely recommend!

Afterstory follows an Aboriginal woman and her daughter on a literary tour through England. The two have a complicated relationship impacted by colonisation and racism, sexual abuse and a terrible family tragedy. The dynamic between the two felt authentic and I loved the way they grew closer over the trip, and how it led them to a newfound appreciation of and confidence in traditional cultural knowledge. I enjoyed the information about some titans from the western literary canon, but loved how they were not canonised. Della especially, engaged with this information in a down to earth manner and through the lens of her own cultural knowledge. A thoroughly satisfying read.
