To me this story had all the right elements to keep me hooked. In perfect Sanderson fashion, the final 3 hours or so (I listened to the audiobook(on 1.35x speed)) has wonderful twists and turns that make it nearly impossible to stop listening. Speaking of listening, Michael Kramer and Kate Reading did a fantastic job (as always) narrating this novel. I did take a peak in the physical copy and the illustrations are amazing as well. I’m keeping this review vague because you should read it yourself lol.

An anime-inspired novella (particularly Your Name) was not on my Cosmere bingo list but Brandon Sanderson manages to pull it off.
Beautifully illustrated, both Yumi and Painter's worlds have such a strong and distinct sense of place that it makes the final twist even more jarring .
Ol mate Hoid is the narrator and so would not recommend this to first-time Cosmere readers (lots of reference to Stormlight Archive and Mistborn, and just general Hoid-ness that can be off-putting and sometimes just plain irritating if you don't know who/what he is).

4.25–fun read, fantastic world-building, excellent story!! It took a little while for the characters to grow on me and around the middle I was thinking that yes, this is a solid 4 because of that. It also isn’t very fast-paced, but then picks up at the end. This was okay but I wish it were just a little faster. I really loved the world and the themes of art and creating! I honestly think I could’ve left the romance and still kept the ending and maybe would’ve been happier with that, I think somehow it would’ve been more poignant. Design was my fave because we love a sassy nonhuman, I’m very predictable 🙂↔️

Much better than I was expecting. Character depth and development was a lot better than I've come to expect from Sanderson. He tends to focus more on worldbuilding than characters, but this book sufficiently impressed me with a balance of both. Characters have distinct enough voices that they feel like they could be real people, and you can tell that Sanderson did quite a bit of research to make their common knowledge feel common (like how high-quality satin lays). I particularly liked Yumi's growth in making her own choices and growing beyond the abusive situations of her childhood. The themes about art and artist in the wake of AI thought out and poignant, and fit well within the book and without it. I also really liked the art. Every time I wanted to give up reading, I would look at the beautiful art and get enough energy to keep going. You can tell it was done by someone who loves women, and sees them as more than just objects of desire.

Good well written book as per usual with Sanderson! I really enjoyed the hints of Asian culture and the world building in general. This was a fun read and I loved the characters. I think I like Tresa of the emerald sea a little more though
