I love a queer retelling and this makes me want to read Emma. There was great character development and engaging art. The colors are so vibrant.
There were a few plot gaps. I felt like some important information got weirdly skipped. Still worth the read though.

I have never read Emma before, so I’m sure some of the comparisons were lost on me but the book can stand alone even without that. The plot was very fast paced and a light read for the most part. Definitely a good option if you don’t have a lot of time to read and you just want something fun.
Because there was such a big cast and the audiobook was pretty short, it doesn’t really give you enough time to learn to tell the voice actors apart. This made it confusing at times and certain characters kind of blended in with others. I did think all the voice actors were great, there were just a lot of time in a short time. The background and scene transition music were both very loud and distracting. I did like the other effects (chips crunching, cheering, etc).
Because I listened to the audiobook, I didn’t see any of the illustrations and I feel like I also missed a bit because of that.

I received an ARC of the audiobook through NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to experience this audiobook before its official release!
A full-cast recording with the addition of atmospheric background noise was a really interesting way of turning a graphic novel into an audiobook. I found myself disliking Evan at points. However, I felt exactly the same about Emma in the Austen novel this is based on, so I would say that dislike of Evan is actually a credit to the author for their ability to hold true to the source materials while adding an interesting spin on the story. It was sometimes hard to keep track of which voice belongs to which character, and with how short the book was and without the aid of illustrations, some of the smaller characters felt left behind by the production. I think I would have preferred to read the physical graphic novel more, but this was an enjoyable listen!

I felt this was a sweet and realistic take on being queer in high school. Liked that the characters were a lil messy.
