Interesting world-building. Characters that are intriguing, and have very specific goals. All very good! Each of the scenes held my attention and kept me reading.
The connection moments were a bit confusing.
Loved Mephi and Jovis friendship! Best part!

What lovely worldbuilding!! From a loveable animal companion, to creepy bone shard life-draining magic, to floating islands which move in and out of their years-long seasons, I am itching to learn more about this place.
While in many ways you could tell by the quality of the writing that this is the author's first novel, it also teems with creativity and depth. At times the chapters shifting character perspectives felt a little bit trite, whereas at others it became a necessary function of the storytelling. Despite a few misgivings, I will definitely be continuing with this series.

It might be saying something that my favorite character is the animal that almost has no lines in the book, but even so the rest of the cast isn't too bad. It is simply the repetition that drags my opinion on them. "I told him no, my heart wrenching with the lie" or "why was I talking to an animal"? happened too many times.
Regardless the world is fascinating, but I feel like the ending happened without Lin really thinking of the consequences... but maybe that will be addressed next book.
And I pretty much loved the writing, but Stewart does use "thing" as a descriptor about three times, which is a cop out. One time she said "it was an iron thing" an I truly did not know if she was talking about the key or the gate, because "thing" is a poor descriptor.
Mephi is 10/10

4.5 stars | I’ve only had Mephi for a day and a half, but if anything happens to him, I’ll kill everyone in this room and then myself.

I like an epic fantasy that doesn't constantly wander off on tangents. Very organized, and all the story lines tie together. The magic in the book is closer to marvel comics than Tolkien, but I enjoyed it.
