Started slow, but eventually really got into it.

Dec 2017--coming back here to add that over time this has become one of those books that I continue to think about months and months later. As I look for new books to read, I find myself craving something else like it (or Ivey's other book, the snow child).

This gripped me. I felt so invested in the lives of the characters past and present. The writing was gorgeous and the depiction of the land gave me wanderlust so hard

4.5. I admit that the beginning of this book started a little more slowly than I liked but as it progressed I was really taken in with the otherworldliness of it. It really is an unusual and many times thrilling adventure.

The early-Alaska-expoloration theme has been done better, and The Snow Child was much more complex and compelling, but Ivey can prose like no other (verb?).

3.5 rounded down; very beautifully written, and I found myself smiling a lot during Sophie’s chapters, but I couldn’t help but feel it was a bit drawn out. I had to make myself keep listening. A nice winter read though, that’s for sure

This is quite a lovely book, especially if you enjoy [a:Patricia A. McKillip|25|Patricia A. McKillip|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1220752490p2/25.jpg] or [a:Robin McKinley|5339|Robin McKinley|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1314406026p2/5339.jpg]. It is a bit slow, but I can say that I went to my mammagram at 50% in and when I arrived home an hour later I was at 95%, much to my surprise. The book just flew.

Lovely.
