I've been reading a few books in this series that inspired the TV program - they are well-written and I like the fact that characters from previous books reappear in different guises and threads of previous murder investigations come through each book. Author Tess Gerritson was herself a medical doctor, so brings a wealth of background knowledge to Maura Isles character.

2.5, rounded down for the ridiculous premise. Demons, really? HUH? I thought Gerritsen was a doctor? Was I wrong to assume this implied she was a somewhat rational thinker who believes in science, evidence, and the whole range of human emotions and behaviors (vs. believing that evil people are the spawn of the Nephilim/Devil?)... Um.... No, just NO. I've liked some of the others in the Rizzoli & Isles series, but this one just comes out of NOWHERE, and pulls us into an absurd tale of the occult, evil incarnate, ancient conspiracies, haunted houses, secret societies... Too much suspension of disbelief is required to truly enjoy The Mephisto Club.

Gerritsen’s writing is sharp and engaging, with a great blend of suspense and psychological tension. The characters feel real and relatable, and the dark, atmospheric setting adds an extra layer of intrigue. It’s a thrilling ride that keeps you guessing until the very end.

Jane and Maura are called to the home of a young woman on Christmas Eve. She's been murdered and her body spread throughout the house. It's a bloodbath. Only problem--some of the body parts found don't belong to the victim's body.

Not only that, Maura struggles with her attraction for the young priest from The Sinner. And there's a new man on the scene--Andrew Sansone--a wealthy retired professor who chases down evil. When the second body is found behind his home, he feels the need to get involved. Especially since the killer is leaving satanic symbols at each crime scene.

But the killer isn't done. Antoher body shows up murdered--the famous Dr. O'Donnell--friend to all murderers. The killer's first victim is then found...way up in New York. Jane and Maura realize their killer is after someone specific--and they need to find her first.

Full of symbology, horrific murder scenes, and intelligent conversation, you get it all when you read this book. Of course, reading the first 5 will help get you into the story. The story here reads more like a Dan Brown book/movie or National Treasure, where the hunt for the meaning behind things is just as intense as the hunt for the killer itself.

Fantastic. Couldn’t put it down. As well as it being a great crime novel, I really enjoyed the elements of theology. Loved it.

This book is a great thriller read. With a second viewpoint from the unknown killer, the reader gets drawn into this mythical evil based book.
