I had never heard of the author Noah Gordon until I saw his recent obituary in the New York Times. The Winemaker was the only one of his books in ebook from at my local library. I was pleased and surprised to find a book I really enjoyed by an author who was new to me. The subject was a a vineyard in Spain and the young man who moved it from making poor vinegar to a winery of very good wine. The story included his adventures in one of Spain's 19th Century civil wars where he was tricked into joining one side. After his escape from the conflict he went into exile in France where he learned to make good wine instead of bad vinegar. The author researched grape growing and wine making and I enjoyed reading about the pruning of vines and crushing of grapes. I will be looking for Noah Gordon's other books.

Enjoyable. A bit slow in the middle.
Good information on wine growing and making which made it more interesting. Worth the read

A friend lent me a copy of this book in the Spanish translation. It's a nice piece of historical fiction set in the Cataluna region of Spain in the late 19th century. Overall I found it a pleasant but not gripping read.
