Not as good as Uglies. I'm not giving it 4 stars, cuz nothing happened for the first half of the book. I'm interested to read the others but it is not the kind of book that I'll buy, so I'll wait till the others are translated in French.

A good, spooky read, well written as usual by Westerfeld, but not as appealing for me as some of his others. It is more suitable for a younger readership though, so this widen's its appeal.

Eh. Fun concept. "Midnighters" are those special few born at exactly midnight and are the only people who experience a 25th hour every evening.
But Westerfeld's tale is too light for my tastes. I understand YA novels need to be more accessible to younger readers, but I feel he has taken it too far that direction. The Uglies series was written for the same audience but felt like it had more meat to it.
In addition, the book is obviously a first novel and has almost no closure at all. Overall a frustrating read.

Fast moving. Relatable characters. Tension. Great teen read. Has been devoured by boys and girls alike - the whole trilogy (I haven't read two and three yet because they are not in the library long enough I managed to get number one for a weekend because a kid brought it back on Friday).

It was ok but I think it’s definitely not as good as the uglies series and maybe it’s aimed at younger audiences than uglies. I like the concept more than the actual book but who doesn’t want an extra hour in the day?

I'm getting worried that perhaps I just don't appreciate Mr. Westerfeld as an author, rather than just that one book. Plot, oh dear. If felt as if the majority of the book, he was working up to something, but it never came. The whole book was an escalator that led to nowhere. And then in the last five pages Westerfeld realized, "Oh, plot. There was supposed to be a plot, um, well..." And again, the vocabulary was horrendous, and where in the world did all that swearing come from?! Totally uneccesary, there's no place for it in any case, but even in the placement of the word in a sentence, it just didn't make sense! I'm sorry, maybe this is the perfect novel for some people, but its not for me. I'm scared to try and attempt to read another novel by this guy if I'm just going to get the same escalation with no climax with atrocious vocabulary. Ick, in my opinion.

Really interesting and very different from the Uglies series, but still really adventurous. We'll see how the other books are, because I felt that Uglies declined throughout.
